Environmental pollution in Trabzon plateaus

Overview

High-altitude plateaus in Trabzon, Turkey, including the Camiboğazı Plateau and areas near the Sümela Monastery, have faced environmental degradation due to increased automobile access and tourism. Observations indicated significant littering from day-trippers, such as plastic waste and food packaging, which has polluted local streams and contributed to a decline in traditional cattle farming.

In response, the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality conducted a comprehensive cleanup operation in the Kurtdere and Camiboğazı plateaus to preserve their natural structure. While these areas are located within Gümüşhane borders, they are heavily used by residents from both regions. Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç stated that maintaining a clean environment is a “shared responsibility,” noting that municipal efforts must be complemented by increased environmental consciousness among citizens.
