Environmental restoration in Rio de Janeiro
Overview
Environmental restoration initiatives in Rio de Janeiro are targeting various ecosystems to promote biodiversity and ecological recovery.
Initial efforts focused on the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, where a project coordinated by Projeto Água Vida and the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment aimed to plant mangrove and restinga vegetation in a 50-meter stretch near Praça Tom Jobim. Broader successes have been reported in Cachoeiras de Macacu, where the Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve (REGUA) has spent 25 years transforming former cattle ranching land into Atlantic Forest, and in Barra da Tijuca through the Restinga Project.
Recent progress has been noted in Guanabara Bay, specifically within the Guapi-Mirim Environmental Protection Area. Following three years of reforestation efforts along the Caceribu River, a degraded mangrove area is showing signs of recovery. Since June 2023, approximately 1,250 seedlings of black, white, and red mangrove species have been planted through a project led by Projeto Meros do Brasil, sponsored by Petrobras, and conducted in partnership with Cooperativa Manguezal Fluminense and the Rede de Conservação Águas da Guanabara (REDAGUA).
Some planted trees have already reached heights of roughly three meters, and natural regeneration has been observed via new plants and propagules. This restoration utilizes a technique of transplanting young plants from preserved areas to degraded sections to support local species, such as the grouper (Epinephelus itajara), which can weigh over 400 kilograms.
