In early July 2026, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus opened a production of Aeschylus' Persae, beginning a tour across Greece. Later that month, the venue staged Euripides' Troades, the first fully accessible performance in its history, with organized transport, tactile tours, Braille programmes, Greek Sign Language interpretation, subtitles and audio description. The show ran on 31 July and 1 August; after a brief cancellation of the 31-July premiere because of nearby wildfires, a second performance was held on 2 August. More than 200 spectators with visual or hearing impairments attended, and total audience numbers exceeded 8,000 across the two days. Supported by Alpha Bank and accessibility consultancy Liminal as part of the Athens-Epidaurus Festival's ~~"Culture~~ “Culture for ~~All"~~ All” initiative, the production continued the National Theatre of Greece's broader accessibility programme, which since 2023 has delivered over 200 actions benefiting more than 130,000 people. The theatre has also dealt with weather-related disruptions. In July 2024, a heavy downpour forced the early-season play “Eirini – A Visit to Aristophanes’ Work” to stop after an hour, prompting chaos as thousands of spectators evacuated and leading the organizers to issue automatic ticket refunds. The same period saw the cancellation of the Troades performance on 31 July due to smoke from Argolis wildfires, with refunds or rescheduled attendance offered. ~~These incidents illustrate~~ Following the ~~venue's ongoing efforts~~ Troades cancellation, PASOK MP Andreas Poulos raised a parliamentary inquiry regarding a lack of coordination between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. While the Ministry of Culture stated audiences were “timely informed,” critics argued many attendees were only notified while en route or after arriving, exposing them to ~~balance safety, audience experience,~~ smoke and ~~its inclusive programming.~~ congestion.
