Erblin Osmani international football eligibility

The international eligibility of Bayern Munich midfielder Erblin Osmani became a subject of debate in early September. While the 17-year-old had previously represented Germany at the U16 and U17 levels, Kosovo’s Ambassador to Germany and Denmark, Dr. Faruk Ajeti, announced that Osmani had received a Kosovar passport, suggesting a potential switch.

By mid-September, Osmani officially chose to represent Kosovo. Kosovo coach Franco Foda included the player in a 27-man call-up for the Nations League ahead of a match against Ireland. This decision marked a significant talent acquisition for Kosovo following the uncertainty regarding his future with the German Football Association (DFB).

Osmani’s decision has drawn attention in German media, with the outlet Bild describing the move as a ‘loss for the German national team’. While he has accepted the invitation to play for Kosovo, regulatory nuances remain regarding his permanent eligibility. Under current regulations, his ability to switch national representation could be restricted if he appears in official competitive matches for Kosovo during their upcoming fixtures against Ireland, Austria, and Israel.

Coach Franco Foda has since addressed these developments, noting that while Osmani has chosen Kosovo, his eligibility for Germany remains a ‘technical possibility’ depending on his future appearances. Foda also provided broader squad updates, including discussions regarding recruitment of players like Arijon Ibrahimovic and the inclusion of talents Milot Avdyli and Dion Kacuri.
