ESA Earth observation infrastructure development

Overview

The European Space Agency (ESA) is advancing European Earth observation capabilities through new architectural and digital infrastructure initiatives.

Initially, Leonardo was awarded a contract to define the architecture for the future EU Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS). This study aims to enhance Europe’s autonomous decision-making in security and defence by developing a sovereign, resilient, and federated end-to-end architecture that integrates national, institutional, and commercial assets.

Following this, ESA awarded a 30-month contract to OVHcloud and CGI to design and deploy the Digital Earth Observation (Digital EO) infrastructure. This project focuses on creating a decentralized digital backbone to process and store satellite data, with the capacity to manage over 500 petabytes by 2035. The infrastructure will utilize sovereign cloud services and high-performance computing to support programs such as Copernicus and the Destination Earth initiative, with initial deployment planned across Italy, France, Germany, and Poland.
