Eskişehir sustainable urban transport initiative

Overview

The Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality has introduced a ‘Car-free Sunday’ initiative as a model for sustainable urban transport. Launched in January, the program converts specific city center areas into pedestrian and cyclist zones on the last Sunday of every month.

Presented to Turkish municipalities during the European Mobility Week workshop, the initiative aims to improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and enhance public safety. Urban Planner Bilen Deniz Uyar noted that the permanent municipal practice is designed to prioritize human movement over motorized vehicles and increase awareness regarding the environmental impacts of private car usage.
