Establishment of Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority

Overview

The Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA) has been established to provide decentralized governance for six eastern districts in Nagaland: Tuensang, Mon, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak, and Shamator. The framework follows a tripartite agreement signed on February 5, 2026, between the Government of India, the Nagaland government, and the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO).

Following the unanimous passage of the Revised FNTA Bill 2026 by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in September, President Droupadi Murmu granted official assent to the bill. The authority is designed to devolve powers over 46 subjects to address regional neglect and developmental disparities, serving as an alternative to the ENPO’s long-standing demand for a separate state.

Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav has emphasized that the agreement is a “significant milestone” for the region. He has highlighted the potential for economic growth in sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, handloom, and tourism, encouraging the adoption of modern technologies to drive prosperity in the newly designated districts.
