ETH Zürich OLED manufacturing breakthrough
Overview
Researchers at ETH Zürich have developed a new method for manufacturing ultra-small OLED pixels using photolithography, a high-precision technique typically used for semiconductor microchips.
To prevent organic materials from degrading due to harsh solvents, the team created long-chain luminescent polymers with a ‘core-shell’ molecular architecture. In this design, a color-emitting organic core is protected by a star-like outer shell that reacts to UV light. When exposed to UV radiation, the outer arms cross-link to make the material insoluble, enabling the creation of fine-scale geometric structures. This development, published in the journal Nature, is intended to facilitate smaller, brighter displays for high-resolution camera viewfinders and augmented reality (AR) glasses.
