Ethereum whale capitulation and shifting market dynamics
Overview
An Ethereum whale, inactive for approximately three years, transferred 7,323 ETH to the Kraken exchange, realizing a loss estimated between $6 million and $19 million. The investor had originally acquired the assets at an average price of approximately $2,723 between 2022 and 2023 and had previously used Rocket Pool to stake the assets for passive income.
This capitulation occurred during a period of market divergence. While micro Bitcoin holders exited the market at their fastest pace since December 2024, Bitcoin whales and sharks increased their holdings. This period also saw four consecutive days of inflows into U.S.-based spot Bitcoin ETFs, led by BlackRock’s IBIT, and significant Bitcoin movements by Galaxy Digital. Market activity was further influenced by uncertainty regarding the CLARITY Act and a security incident involving Coldcard hardware wallets.
More recently, Ethereum supply has shown signs of tightening. A large-scale withdrawal of 5,300 ETH, valued at approximately $9.98 million, was recorded from Kraken as large holders shifted assets off trading platforms. Additionally, Ethereum staking activity has reached a record high, with total staked ETH surpassing 41 million, representing roughly 33.8% of the circulating supply. Analysts suggest these factors, alongside buyer-dominant spot market activity, may point toward a potential supply squeeze.
