EU and EBRD support in the Western Balkans

The European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are providing various forms of financial and programmatic support across the Western Balkans. In Montenegro, an amendment to a grant agreement was approved to fund the Mateševo–Andrijevica section of the Bar–Boljare highway. The EBRD will provide up to 147.4 million euros from the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance, while the EU intends to provide a total of 150 million euros in support, including technical assistance and management fees. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, support is being directed toward digitalization and the creative industries. The ‘Go Digital in the Western Balkans’ program, a collaboration between Addiko Bank d.d. Sarajevo, the EBRD, and the EU, assists small and medium-sized enterprises with automation and green technologies through credit lines up to 1,000,000 euros. Additionally, the EU Creative Europe program has provided over seven million euros to more than 100 cultural projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina over the last four years, benefiting institutions such as the Sarajevo Film Festival and the Bosnian National Theatre in Zenica. The 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival recently concluded with the Srce Sarajeva awards ceremony at the National ~~Theatre.~~ Theatre, attracting approximately 150,000 visitors. The Best Feature Film prize was awarded to ‘Everytime’, directed by Sandra Wollner, which the jury described as a “hypnotic, elastic and transcendental” story. Other major winners included Ana Urushadze for Best Director, Eva Kostić for Best Actress, and Adrian Văncică for Best Actor. In documentary categories, ‘To Hold a Mountain’ won Best Feature Documentary and ‘Holy Defiance’ won Best Short Documentary. Emir Hadžihafizbegović received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo. The festival, which hosted over 250 films from approximately 70 countries, included discussions regarding the role of the EU’s Creative Europe program in supporting regional integration through culture.
