EU and EBRD support in the Western Balkans
Overview
The European Union and the EBRD continue to support large-scale infrastructure across the Western Balkans. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, construction on the 20-kilometer Rača–Bijeljina highway has accelerated, with the first seven kilometers expected to be finished by the end of this year. Furthering regional connectivity, the company Integra has been selected to design the Orašje – Brčko District section of the future Orašje – Tuzla highway. Additionally, JP Autoceste FBiH has begun property acquisition for the Lašva – Travnik – Jajce expressway. Significant adjustments were also made to the Mostar North – Mostar South section of Corridor 5C; to avoid a military complex near the Livač barracks, the route has been shifted toward a hill, requiring a new tunnel. Plans for this Mostar north–south highway section continue to be finalized. In Sarajevo, the 10.5 million KM investment in a new transformer station has resulted in the opening of the Sarajevo 12 station. In Zvornik, contracts have been finalized for the reconstruction of the Basic Court building and a new kindergarten in Branjevo. In Banja Luka, works are progressing on the Petrićevac pedestrian bridge. In Croatia, archaeological surveys continue for the A7 motorway, while tenders have been opened for the Slano–Mravinjac section of the Metković–Dubrovnik motorway. Notably, the Sveti Ilija tunnel on the DC76 state road is scheduled to close to all traffic for 90 working days starting October 18 to facilitate repairs to damaged drainage system inspection hatches. In Serbia, construction has commenced on the Dub–Dubci state road connecting Užice and Bajina Bašta, which includes a 1,260-meter tunnel under the Kadinjača pass. Recent developments show construction has begun on the Kadinjača tunnel and six bridges, a project valued at approximately 200 million KM.
