Overview

In early July 2026 Romanian firefighters from Alba were sent to France under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. By the end of July a 20‑person Estonian wildfire‑suppression team departed for Sardinia, basing at Monte Pisanus and joining French crews and a helicopter unit; the mission is slated to end in mid‑August.

Later in July the Estonian deployment was detailed: the team will operate from 31 July to 16 August, providing ground crews and aerial support amid temperatures near 40 °C.

On 31 July Lithuania approved a humanitarian assistance mission, sending 32 firefighters, 40 officials and nine specialised vehicles to the Zirond region in southern France. French authorities have been battling fires for over a week, evacuating roughly 220,000 residents, destroying more than 200 homes and burning about 42,000 ha of forest. The Lithuanian contingent arrived by land after a three‑day journey, reinforcing the same EU‑wide mutual‑aid framework.

These successive deployments highlight an expanding pattern of intra‑EU cooperation to combat increasingly severe summer wildfires across the continent.
