EU wildfire response coordination
Overview
In early July 2026, Romanian firefighters from Alba were sent to France under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. By the end of July, a 20-person Estonian wildfire-suppression team departed for Sardinia, basing at Monte Pisanus to join French crews and a helicopter unit; the mission was slated to end in mid-August.
On 31 July, Lithuania approved a humanitarian assistance mission, sending 32 firefighters, 40 officials, and nine specialised vehicles to the Zirond region in southern France. The Lithuanian contingent, including the ‘Perkūnas’ unit, arrived by land after a three-day journey to assist in a crisis that had already seen the evacuation of roughly 220,000 residents, the destruction of more than 200 homes, and the burning of about 42,000 ha of forest.
By 16 August, the Lithuanian team returned home following their two-week mission. Responders worked in the Bordeaux and Marseille regions, performing fire reconnaissance, extinguishing active flames, and protecting residential areas. Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas noted that such missions demonstrate Lithuania’s solidarity with European partners and strengthen international cooperation. These successive deployments highlight an expanding pattern of intra-EU cooperation to combat increasingly severe summer wildfires across the continent.
