EU sanctions regarding Ukrainian children deportation

Overview

The European Union is preparing a new round of sanctions targeting 27 Russian individuals and entities accused of the forced deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children. EU ambassadors have reviewed proposed blacklists, with adoption expected by the end of September.

Maksym Maksymov, head of the Bring Kids Back UA initiative, welcomed the measures, stating they send a message that these crimes will not go unpunished. He warned that children under Russian control face risks of militarization and the “systematic erasure of their Ukrainian identity”.

Discrepancies exist regarding the scale of the displacement. While Ukraine has verified the deportation of over 20,500 children, estimates from Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab suggest the number could be as high as 35,000. Reports indicate that Russian occupation authorities have used digital “product lists” to filter children by physical characteristics, such as age, gender, and eye color, to facilitate forced adoptions.
