The military alliance between Russia and North Korea continues to intensify through weaponry transfers and personnel deployment. North Korea has delivered various short-range ballistic missiles, including KN-23 and KN-24 models, to Russia. While at least two of these missiles have reportedly been used in recent attacks against Ukraine, intelligence officials note that no transfers of the more powerful KN-30 missiles have been recorded yet. Regarding personnel, North Korean forces have been deployed to Russia’s Kursk region. While earlier estimates placed deployment at approximately 14,000 to 15,000 personnel, recent reports indicate approximately 8,000 to 8,500 North Korean soldiers remain on Russian territory, organized into four brigades focused on securing the border. ~~While initial deployments faced challenges with equipment and drone warfare, experts note these forces have since adapted.~~ Casualties are significant, with Ukrainian estimates suggesting up to 3,000 North Korean soldiers were killed, while a BBC analysis of a memorial site estimated the death toll at approximately 2,300. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised alarms regarding the scale of this involvement, warning that between 30,000 and 50,000 North Korean soldiers may be sent to support Russia. He noted that these troops are gaining real-world combat experience and training with drones, which he described as a ‘significant issue for Pacific security.’ He observed that while North Korean troops have participated in operations like Kursk, they have largely avoided deep incursions into Ukrainian territory to minimize losses. In response to these developments, Ukraine is preparing new long-range operations against Russia, including successful tests of interceptors against Shahed jet fighters. Zelenskyy has also criticized China, noting that dual-use Chinese technologies continue to reach Russia despite a lack of pressure from Beijing.
