EU worker health and safety regulation updates
Overview
The European Parliament has moved to strengthen worker protections through two primary legislative focuses: chemical safety and mental health.
Regarding chemical safety, the Parliament approved a sixth revision of the Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic substances Directive (CMRD). This update introduces new exposure limit values for hazardous substances such as cobalt, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and 1,4-dioxane. The directive also mandates enhanced training and protective equipment for high-risk sectors, including emergency services and chemical production, to combat occupational cancer.
In a separate non-binding initiative, MEPs voted to urge the European Commission to establish rules addressing psychosocial risks. The proposed measures aim to reduce workplace stress, burnout, and bullying, while emphasizing the importance of regular risk assessments regarding workload and algorithmic management. The initiative also reiterates the workers’ right to disconnect.
