Eurasian media forums on disinformation 2026

Entities: Xinhua News Agency (Sinxua) · Kabar (Kyrgyzstan National Information Agency) · Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) · Shanghai Cooperation Organization · KABAR

Overview

In July 2026 the Eurasian region hosted two major media gatherings focused on countering disinformation and fostering cooperation. The Shusha Global Media Forum, organized by Azerbaijan’s Media Development Agency, brought together about 160 journalists from 54 countries on 13‑14 July. Delegates discussed media’s role in peacebuilding, restoring public trust, combating misinformation and AI‑related ethical challenges.

Later in the month, from 27‑29 July, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held its Media and Think‑Tank Forum in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, coinciding with the SCO’s 25th anniversary. Roughly 250 participants from 26 member and partner states, including representatives of leading media outlets, think tanks and government bodies, attended. Co‑organized by Kyrgyzstan’s information agency Kabar and China’s Xinhua, the forum’s theme “SCO in a new era: from mutual understanding to practical cooperation” guided discussions on disinformation, cybersecurity threats and the impact of digital technologies. Speakers such as Dayirbek Orunbekov, head of Kyrgyzstan’s Information Policy Service, and Kabar director Mederbek Shermetaliev highlighted the need for responsible journalism and professional analysis to build mutual trust across the SCO region.

These events illustrate a coordinated Eurasian effort in 2026 to address false information, enhance information security and establish joint ethical frameworks for media practice.
