The landscape of European basketball is shifting toward competing strategic models following the rejection of an NBA takeover proposal in early October 2026. To address market fragmentation, NBA Senior Vice President Giorgos Aivazoglou proposed ‘NBA Europe’, a two-tier structure featuring a semi-open top tier for core clubs and a merit-based Basketball Champions League (BCL). While NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed optimism regarding potential consolidation through partnership, EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno stated the organization is prepared to compete directly if a mutually beneficial deal is not reached. Bueno warned that competing leagues could fragment the market, impacting media rights and fan attendance. In response, EuroLeague has moved forward with an independent 10-year strategic plan approved by all 13 shareholder clubs. The plan aims to increase the league’s total value to over €13 billion by distributing €3.4 billion to teams, sourced from €2.2 billion in revenues and €1.2 billion in franchise fees. CEO Dejan Bodiroga confirmed a structural overhaul expanding the league from 20 to 24 teams for the 2027-28 season, utilizing a two-conference format. Potential new franchises include Valencia Basket, Paris Basketball, Dubai BC, and PAOK, with entry fees ranging from €50 million to €130 million. Former EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu has criticized the NBA’s potential involvement, calling it a ‘significant step backward’ that could undermine the independence of European clubs. Meanwhile, the NBA is targeting an October 2027 launch for its European project, which involves 16 teams and is being developed in collaboration with FIBA. Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum described the initiative as the ‘largest investment in the history of European basketball.’ The NBA model will utilize a merit-based system where permanent franchises coexist with teams qualifying through performance in other leagues. Tatum stated that the NBA’s projected financial distributions to clubs over the first decade could triple the amounts estimated in the EuroLeague’s plan, potentially reaching billions or tens of billions of dollars.
