European border smuggling interdictions

In late June 2026 German customs halted a Belgian‑registered Sprinter at the Bietingen post near the Swiss border, discovering about 117 kg of marijuana that had been routed from the United States through Zurich to the Czech Republic. Prosecutors opened a criminal case after the driver could not produce a transit permit.

A month later Dutch authorities seized roughly 1.2 million counterfeit cigarettes from a van on the A7 near Bad Nieuweschans, close to the German frontier. One suspect was detained and the cargo handed to customs. Subsequent operations in early July saw customs and municipal officials in Deventer inspect tobacco retailers, confiscating hundreds of illegal packs and issuing fines; the seized cigarettes bore foreign warning labels, confirming they had been smuggled into the Netherlands. The final batch of the counterfeit cigarettes was destroyed by incineration on 26 July under judicial supervision.

Together, these actions illustrate a coordinated crackdown on diverse illicit goods—drugs, counterfeit tobacco, and related economic crime—moving across European borders.
