European bypass construction delays and cost increases
Overview
Infrastructure projects for road bypasses in the Czech Republic and Germany are experiencing significant delays and rising costs.
In the Czech Republic, the 5.3-kilometer Přeštice bypass on road I/27 has been delayed due to extensive archaeological discoveries. Originally slated for completion by late 2026, the project is now expected to be operational between October and November 2027. The Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) anticipates that the original 788 million CZK budget will increase as a result of the nearly one-year delay.
In Germany, the B172n southern bypass in Pirna has seen costs escalate from an initial 36 million euro estimate to approximately 288.4 million euros. Construction of the Gottleubatalbrücke bridge has been halted following the discovery of structural defects, specifically cavities in the concrete of four pillars caused by improper workmanship. Additionally, the Kohlberg tunnel project faced delays due to soft rock formations and requirements to protect local bat populations. The bypass opening is now targeted for 2027.
