The EU’s revised eIDAS framework continues to drive national shifts from paper to electronic identity documents. In Italy, the transition from paper to Electronic Identity Cards (CIE) has accelerated. Following the August 3, 2026, loss of international travel validity for paper cards, Italian Prefectures have begun distributing six-month provisional documents for urgent travel. While paper cards remain valid for domestic services until 31 January 2027, they are no longer valid for SPID access. To manage administrative backlogs, Italian municipalities are implementing various temporary measures. In Rome, extraordinary open days were scheduled for early September, with further special sessions planned for the weekend of September 26 and 27. New announcements indicate additional extraordinary open days for October 10 and 11, 2026. These sessions ~~include information points~~ will occur across several districts, including Municipalities III, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and ~~release centers at locations such~~ XV, as well as former Tourist Information Points in Piazza delle Cinque ~~Lune~~ Lune, Piazza Sonnino, and Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, and the release point at Via Petroselli ~~52, though appointments~~ 52. Under Decree Law n. 108/2026, paper documents remain temporarily valid only for specific, limited purposes until the January 2027 deadline. New regulations for Italian CIEs issued after July 30, 2026, grant citizens aged 70 and older unlimited physical validity, though digital certificates still expire every 10 years. ~~Meanwhile, Switzerland will introduce biometric identity cards on November 1, 2026, and Greece has ended the use of old blue police identity cards for international travel.~~
