European dining and social activity costs

Overview

Data from late 2026 indicates significant regional disparities in the cost of dining and social activities across Europe.

Initial reports highlighted Switzerland as the most expensive European nation for restaurant dining, with three-course dinners for two averaging approximately 113 euros, significantly exceeding the European average of 56 euros. In contrast, Balkan nations like Albania, North Macedonia, and Kosovo were noted for relatively inexpensive meal options.

Subsequent analysis by the Deutsche Bank Research Institute, detailed in the report ‘Mapping the World’s Prices 2026’, expanded this scope to include a ‘Cheap Date Index’ across 28 cities. Utilizing crowdsourced data from Numbeo, the index measures a basket of goods including a mid-range meal for two, a bottle of wine, clothing, cinema tickets, and transport.

Geneva and Zurich were identified as the most expensive locations at €407 and €400 respectively. Nordic cities also showed high costs, with Oslo and Copenhagen tied at €323, followed by Stockholm at €310 and Helsinki at €296. Among major economies, London was the most expensive at €317, with Birmingham also appearing in the top ten at €290.

In contrast, Istanbul was identified as the most affordable city at €168, while Rome remained relatively low-cost at €195. The average cost across the 28 surveyed cities was €270.
