Severe summer droughts and extreme heatwaves across Europe have significantly strained the regional power grid by impacting both hydroelectric and nuclear energy production. Low river levels and high water temperatures have forced several nuclear plants to shut down or curtail output, including facilities in France, Hungary, Romania, and Switzerland. In France, EDF has adjusted production at the Golfech and Saint-Alban plants due to temperature limits on the Garonne and Rhône rivers. In Switzerland, Axpo reduced output at the Beznau plant as the Aare river reached 25 °C. Romania’s Nuclearelectrica implemented a preventive shutdown of unit 1 at the Cernavodă plant because of critically low Danube levels. Additionally, Hungary has faced challenges with its sole nuclear plant, and Slovenia has reduced production due to high temperatures and low flow in the Sava river. In Romania, the crisis previously led to the temporary closure of Dacia and Ford factories to maintain grid stability, while other regions like Slovenia and Serbia reported reduced production due to low river flows.
