European fisheries aid due to Middle East crisis

Overview

European fisheries and aquaculture sectors are receiving targeted financial support to mitigate rising costs caused by the crisis in the Middle East.

In Italy, the Tuscany Region has launched a FEAMPA funding initiative to assist companies involved in the commercialization and processing of seafood. An initial 238,440 euros has been allocated for the period between February 28 and December 31, 2026, with the potential for total resources to reach approximately 3.5 million euros following European Commission approval.

Similarly, the European Commission approved a 4.5 million euro German state aid scheme. This program provides direct grants to German companies in primary fishery and aquaculture production to cover up to 70% of estimated fuel cost increases incurred between March 1 and July 23, 2026. This aid is facilitated through the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), which allows EU member states to provide relief to vulnerable sectors facing economic shocks from the conflict.
