European haunted tourism and spooky destinations
Overview
Various European establishments and historical sites are promoting paranormal experiences and eerie backstories to attract visitors during the Halloween season.
In the United Kingdom, the Golden Fleece pub in York reports sightings of Lady Alice Peckett and a British airman, while the Ancient Ram Inn in Gloucestershire claims to host approximately 20 ghosts. Author Peter Naldrett, following the release of his book Spooky Britain, has identified 100 areas famed for sinister backstories, including the York Treasurer’s House, where a plumber allegedly witnessed a Roman soldier in 1953. Other notable UK sites include Edinburgh’s ghost tours and Whitby’s Dracula experiences.
In Ireland, The Shelbourne in Dublin offers stays where guests may encounter the spirit of Mary Masters. Other themed experiences are noted in Norway and Sweden. Beyond hospitality, historical monuments such as the Chapel of Bones in Evora, Portugal, which features approximately 5,000 human skulls and bones, and the White Tower in Thessaloniki, Greece, are highlighted as significant destinations for those interested in the supernatural.
