European human trafficking awareness initiatives

Overview

European institutions and organizations observed the European Day Against Human Trafficking through various awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. In Italy, the Puglia Region used light displays and survivor stories to highlight issues like forced marriage and labor exploitation. In Croatia, police and the Red Cross conducted workshops for students regarding sexual exploitation and forced labor, while Slovenia’s Confederation of Trade Unions 90 called for improved victim protection following investigations into an illegal cigarette factory.

In Poland, efforts included police workshops for youth to recognize deceptive recruitment. Additionally, a conference in Kielce titled ‘Man is Not a Commodity’ brought together experts from the Ministry of Interior and Administration, the Police, and the Border Guard to discuss victim identification and prevention. Discussions at the conference noted that while Europe saw approximately 10,000 cases in the previous year, nearly 200 confirmed cases occurred in Poland.
