Overview

In late July 2026 Europe advanced both hydrogen storage and production to support renewable power integration.

Denmark announced a pilot to convert former North Sea gas‑filled salt caverns into large‑scale underground hydrogen storage. The project, part of a €1.3 billion Power‑to‑X programme, will capture surplus wind and solar electricity, electrolyse water into hydrogen, and store the gas for several months, aiming to demonstrate industrial‑scale seasonal storage for a carbon‑free grid.

The next day the United Kingdom moved forward on green hydrogen generation and grid flexibility. A 30 MW Barrow Green Hydrogen plant in Cumbria will produce about 100 GWh of hydrogen annually for local industry, cutting natural‑gas use and avoiding roughly 18 300 tonnes of CO₂. Simultaneously, a partnership involving GE Vernova and ENGIE-Energy‑Caisse will upgrade two 315 MW units at the Dinorwig pumped‑storage facility, extending its life and boosting its ability to deliver rapid, low‑carbon power to balance renewables.

Together these initiatives illustrate a coordinated European effort to develop hydrogen infrastructure—both storage and generation—and to modernise grid assets, enhancing the continent’s capacity to manage intermittent renewable generation.
