Fuel prices in Spain have risen for six consecutive weeks, approaching yearly highs. Following the removal of the 10% VAT reduction in early July, fuel costs increased by 21%, with diesel reaching approximately €1.82 per litre and gasoline roughly €1.70 per litre by mid-August. This surge in energy costs contributed to Spain’s annual inflation rate rising to 4.3% in August, its highest level since 2023. ~~This inflation rate, which rose from 3.6% in July, exceeds the Eurozone’s harmonized rate of 3.3% and is driven by energy, food prices, and demand for artificial intelligence components.~~ Electricity markets continue to experience extreme volatility. On September 4, wholesale prices saw a significant drop of 18.52%, falling to 138.11 €/MWh. By September 7, wholesale prices averaged 172.07 €/MWh, with a notable spread between the cheapest period (14:00–15:00) and the most expensive (21:00–22:00). To assist in monitoring these fluctuations, the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE) introduced a new indicator in mid-August to analyze daily price spreads between high and low four-hour periods.
