European Leopard 2 armored vehicle modernization
Overview
European nations are advancing military modernization programs through the acquisition and upgrading of Leopard 2 family armored vehicles.
In late August 2026, the Austrian Armed Forces received their first modernized Leopard 2A4NV main battle tanks and Ulan infantry fighting vehicles. This delivery is part of the ‘Aufbauplan 2032+’ initiative, a 765 million euro program intended to strengthen land defense capabilities by modernizing 170 tracked vehicles by 2029. The upgrades include digital optics, night-fighting capabilities, and electric turret drives.
Following this, in early September 2026, the Swedish Army received the first of 110 modernized Strv 123A tanks from Germany. Part of the REMO program, these vehicles aim to standardize existing fleets and feature upgraded capabilities such as the Rh120/L55A1 smoothbore gun. Sweden also plans to integrate 44 new Leopard 2A8 tanks, designated as Strv 123B, to reach a total fleet of 154 advanced tanks.
