European medical impersonation fraud investigations
Overview
Authorities in several European countries have arrested individuals suspected of conducting medical impersonation scams targeting elderly victims.
In Switzerland, a 31-year-old Czech national was arrested in Thusis for involvement in ‘shock calls’ in the Riviera and Mendrisiotto regions. The suspect allegedly impersonated medical professionals to pressure victims into believing relatives needed urgent, expensive treatment, coercing them into handing over cash and valuables.
In the Balkans, Bulgarian citizens have been apprehended for similar schemes. In Belgrade, a 54-year-old man is accused of posing as an orthopedic surgeon to defraud women by claiming their children were injured in traffic accidents. Meanwhile, in Croatia, two Bulgarian nationals were arrested for making fraudulent calls to elderly individuals while claiming to be hospital staff or family members, with the group suspected of attempting numerous scams totaling nearly 38,000 euros.
