European migrant smuggling busts

Entities: Spanish National Police · Tucupita · Luis Fernando Zambrano Fernández · Algerian‑origin Mediterranean smuggling network · El Tigre

Overview

In July 2026 coordinated raids in Greece, Bulgaria and the Netherlands broke a ring moving migrants from Turkey into Thessaloniki, leading to seven arrests and €300,000 profit from twelve trips. A few weeks later Italian authorities disrupted a separate Algerian‑led operation that sent 50‑60 migrants to Sardinia, detaining eight suspects.

On 6 August 2026 Spanish police, the Guardia Civil, Europol and partner forces from France, Portugal and Poland carried out a joint operation that resulted in 78 arrests (77 in Spain, one in Algeria) and the seizure of 18 high‑speed vessels worth over €5 million. The network had transported more than 2,000 migrants on 64 documented voyages and earned over €24 million from combined people‑smuggling and synthetic‑drug trafficking to Algeria. Seized assets included €26,675 in cash, 15,000 MDMA tablets, 61 kg of hashish, 500 g of cocaine, 40 g of methamphetamine, a 38‑calibre revolver, and other weapons, along with four high‑value targets and the group’s “hawalader” who managed its informal money‑transfer system. Over 180 officers participated across Andalusia, Murcia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands and other locations.

These successive actions illustrate an intensified, multi‑national effort by European law‑enforcement agencies to target distinct migrant‑smuggling structures that are often linked to drug trafficking and other organized‑crime activities.
