European open-water championships in Paris – updates

Overview

The 2026 European open‑water championships were held on the Seine in Paris on 6–7 August, with the broader European Aquatics Championships running from 7 to 16 August across venues in Paris and Saint‑Denis.

Italy’s Ginevra Taddeucci secured gold in both the 10 km (1 h 2 min 31 s) and 5 km races and added a bronze in the inaugural 3 km knockout sprint, becoming the first Italian woman to claim a double at a single European edition. Taddeucci described the sprint as “a very difficult race, the shorter the distance the more complicated it becomes,” and expressed satisfaction despite disliking the format change.

Germany’s swimmers achieved significant success. Isabel Gose won the knockout sprint gold in 6:41.0, with Hungary’s Bettina Fabian taking silver. German veteran Florian Wellbrock completed a triple gold performance by winning the 5 km, 10 km, and the 4x1.5 km mixed relay. The relay team, consisting of Julia Ackermann, Isabel Gose, Oliver Klemet, and Wellbrock, finished ahead of Italy and Hungary.

Officials confirmed that concerns regarding an oil film in the Seine were addressed after testing showed pollutant levels remained within legal limits. Germany topped the medal table, followed by Italy. In the paracanoe programme, Giovanni Zanda won the Open title and three national golds, positioning him for the 2028 Paralympics.
