European organized vehicle theft operations

Overview

Authorities in Greece and Poland have conducted operations targeting organized vehicle theft and misappropriation.

In Greece, police dismantled multiple rings specializing in stealing vehicles and illegal spare parts trafficking. One operation in Attica led to eight arrests and the recovery of 36 stolen cars, with illegal profits estimated at over 1.5 million euros. A subsequent operation in June resulted in the arrest of 13 members of an organization that resold vehicles using falsified documents. Reports noted that certain older Smart Fortwo models were frequent targets due to demand for components like airbags and steering wheels.

In Poland, the Skorpion anti-crime group arrested two Romanian nationals in Rzeszów. The suspects are accused of the misappropriation of a luxury Mercedes valued at approximately 180,000 EUR, which had been rented in Warsaw. The individuals were allegedly apprehended while planning to steal another luxury vehicle from a rental company.
