In early July 2026, Bulgaria’s Plovdiv Central Station tunnel—a 580‑metre underground passage forming part of a €124.6 million railway‑node upgrade—entered its final construction phase. Major tunnel works were completed, with remaining tasks limited to pedestrian underpasses, elevators, bus‑stop facilities and asphalt paving, all scheduled for completion before the year’s end.

Later that month, Czech authorities detailed the planned Beroun railway tunnel, a 25‑kilometre dual‑track link between Prague and Beroun. The project, now estimated at 76 billion CZK (potentially rising to 87.6 billion CZK), is slated to begin construction in 2032 and finish by 2044. Design modifications were introduced to curb costs, and specialized safety trains were incorporated.

Together, the snapshots illustrate parallel but distinct phases of major railway‑tunnel initiatives across Europe: one nearing operational launch, the other still in long‑term planning with revised budgeting and extended timelines.
