European Saint James celebrations

In late July 2026, communities across Europe marked the feast of Saint James with distinct local traditions.

In Pistoia, Italy, the annual Saint James Festival opened on 25 July with the red‑cloak ceremony, draping the saint’s statue on the Cathedral of San Zeno. The event launched a program of religious services, a historic candle procession, and cultural attractions, highlighted by the medieval Giostra dell’Orso jousting tournament that draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists.

The following day, Polish parishes held their own Saint James celebrations. In Brzesko, a solemn feast featured a homily, a procession with the parish botafumeiro, and the distribution of medals to groups that aided flood recovery. In Krosnowice, the 700‑year anniversary of the parish was marked by a papal plenary indulgence, granting the faithful a year‑long spiritual benefit and allowing remote participation for the infirm.

Both celebrations illustrate how the patron saint of pilgrims is honored through regional rites, communal gatherings, and religious privileges, emphasizing shared heritage while highlighting local customs.
