Rising temperatures across Europe are creating significant challenges for educational institutions. Approximately 16,600 schools in the region currently experience at least one day per year with temperatures exceeding 30°C, a figure projected to double to 34,200 by 2050. Heatwaves have already disrupted the education of over 900,000 students, leading to school closures and shortened class times. In September 2026, a significant heatwave in France coincided with the start of the new academic year. Following a summer classified by Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut as “the hottest summer recorded in France since 1900,” temperatures in southern cities were expected to reach between 36°C and 37°C. Météo-France reported that the summer of 2026 saw average 24-hour temperatures reach 24°C, which was 3.6°C above seasonal norms. The 40°C threshold was crossed 178 times during this period.
