European space launch capacity shortage

Overview

The European Space Agency (ESA) has warned of a critical shortage of domestic launch vehicles projected between 2029 and 2031. This shortage is expected to coincide with peak demand for major satellite constellations, including the Iris², Galileo, and Copernicus Earth observation networks.

Europe currently maintains a significant capacity gap compared to global competitors like the United States and China. This disparity is linked to structural delays, specifically the transition period following the retirement of the Ariane 5 and the two-year interruption of Vega-C flights, which only resumed in late 2024.

To maintain strategic sovereignty, ESA is working with member states to scale Ariane 6 production, aiming for 9 to 10 launches annually, with potential targets of 15. Efforts are also being made to evaluate the costs of expanding production to ensure European satellites can be launched using European-made rockets.
