European stock market performance trends
Overview
European stock markets have experienced periods of volatility and growth influenced by energy prices and sector-specific performance.
In late August, markets showed mixed results. While the Austrian ATX index approached all-time highs, the German DAX experienced volatility due to anticipation regarding NVIDIA’s earnings and upcoming central bank discussions in Jackson Hole. During this period, declining crude oil prices helped ease inflation concerns.
By late September, the upward trend strengthened. On September 21, the STOXX 600 marked its largest daily increase since July, rising 1% as the banking and technology sectors led gains. The STOXX Europe 600 Banks index rose 1.7%, while the technology index also climbed 1.7% due to renewed interest in artificial intelligence. This growth coincided with oil prices dropping below the $100 per barrel threshold for a fourth consecutive session, easing inflationary and interest rate concerns. Regional indices including the DAX, CAC 40, FTSE 100, FTSE MIB, and IBEX 35 all posted gains, while the Greek market saw a recovery following its reclassification into the developed markets category.
By September 23, markets maintained a mild upward trend as investors awaited key macroeconomic indicators, including Eurozone S&P Global Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data, Spanish GDP figures, and German consumer confidence. In the energy sector, Brent crude remained below $100 per barrel, amid expectations of increased supply from the Gulf region, specifically regarding the potential restart of work on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline.
