European summer football transfer window concludes

Overview

The 2026 summer transfer window has concluded, characterized by record-breaking financial activity and the continued dominance of the Premier League. The English top flight has broken its transfer spending record for the second consecutive summer, with total expenditures reaching approximately £3.46 billion (around €4 billion). This represents a significant increase from the previous season’s £3 billion and is triple the spending recorded five years ago.

Manchester City emerged as a primary driver of the market through a significant midfield restructuring. Their investments included approximately €145 million for Enzo Fernández from Chelsea—a deal that matched the British transfer record—and €135 million for Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, contributing to a total market investment estimated at over €525 million for the club. Other City signings included Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille and Iliman Ndiaye from Everton.

Other major Premier League expenditures included Chelsea’s €138 million acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, Liverpool’s £107 million (approximately €125 million) purchase of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal’s €87.5 million move for Bruno Guimaraes. Tottenham Hotspur also engaged in heavy spending, investing over €350 million to secure players such as Sandro Tonali and Savinho, while also securing Mykhailo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea with a £75 million purchase option.

While the spending is historic, some analysts have raised concerns regarding the “financial sustainability of such high levels of debt and installment-based payments.” Despite the massive outflows, the Premier League remains the dominant economic force in global football, with much of the transfer capital circulating within the English ecosystem. Outside of England, Real Madrid was the only club to complete a transfer exceeding €100 million, paying €125 million to RB Leipzig for Giann Diomante.
