European traditional bread festivals
Overview
Traditional bread festivals are being held across various European regions to celebrate culinary heritage and artisanal baking.
In late September, local events took place in Italian towns such as Piobesi Torinese, which featured the Stupinigi flour supply chain and traditional sweets like the Cariton, and Rogliano in Calabria, which hosted workshops and talks on bread as cultural heritage.
By mid-October, the focus expanded to the transborder festival ‘Lo Pan Ner-I Pani delle Alpi’. This twelfth edition involves 72 ovens across 52 municipalities in Italy, Switzerland, and France. Regional official Erik Lavevaz noted the festival is a “vital initiative for the growth of the cereal sector,” aiming to promote local cultivation and celebrate traditional baking as an “intangible cultural heritage.”
