European truckmakers' push to adjust EU CO2 targets

European truck and bus manufacturers are calling for adjustments to the European Union’s 2030 CO2 reduction targets. During the IAA Transportation event in Hanover, executives from companies including Stellantis and members of the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) warned that current regulatory timelines are disconnected from market realities.

Industry leaders cited several critical obstacles to the transition toward zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles, including insufficient charging infrastructure, weak electrical grid connections, high energy costs, and a lack of adequate incentive policies. Manufacturers noted that zero-emission models currently account for only 2.4% of new heavy-duty vehicle registrations in Europe, with rates falling below 1% in markets such as Poland, Spain, and Italy.

To mitigate potential industrial and economic impasses, ACEA representatives have specifically requested a three-year delay to CO2 emission compliance deadlines. Manufacturers emphasized that meeting 2030 goals requires a rapid expansion of public charging points, which currently number fewer than 2,000 for heavy-duty use across the continent.
