The European Union is implementing new standardized labeling regulations to improve consumer transparency regarding product warranties and legal rights. These regulations apply to both physical and online retailers for various goods, including electronics, appliances, toys, and clothing, though food and medicine are exempt. The initiative includes two distinct labeling systems. The first, the ‘Gewährleistungslabel’ (warranty label), is a mandatory notice that informs consumers of their statutory legal rights regarding seller liability for defects. This ensures awareness of legal guarantees, such as the three-year guarantee for new products in Spain, which entitles customers to free repairs or replacements for at least two years on new goods. The second, known as the ‘GARAN’ logo, is reserved for manufacturers offering voluntary extended warranties of more than two years that cover the entire product. This label is not mandatory for all products but serves to help consumers distinguish between minimum legal protections and additional voluntary commercial services. As of September 27, 2026, these regulations have become mandatory. While consumer protection agencies have welcomed the move for providing clarity, the retail sector has expressed concerns. The Händlerbund has criticized the regulation as “unnecessary additional administrative effort.” Additionally, major online platforms like Amazon and eBay are facing operational challenges; specifically, Amazon sellers may struggle with data management and write permissions for product attributes required to display the labels correctly, which could potentially lead to legal warnings.
