The European used car market faces persistent challenges regarding reliability, transparency, and odometer fraud. In the United Kingdom, professionals advise prioritizing durability and low maintenance costs, noting models like the Toyota Yaris are favored for simple technology. Odometer fraud remains a critical issue across the continent. In Germany, imported vehicles are more than five times as likely to have manipulated mileage compared to domestic cars. In Romania, consumer awareness remains low; despite 2023 legislation making odometer tampering illegal, 77.5% of survey respondents would not know where to report fraud. In Serbia, recent market data continues to highlight significant risks. The Volkswagen Golf remains the most popular used model, with nearly 8,000 units sold through August 2026, followed by the Passat and Polo. While the Toyota Corolla has emerged as the top choice for new car buyers, the used market remains susceptible to fraud. Research from carVertical indicates a strong correlation between vehicle damage history and mileage manipulation: vehicles with a recorded history of damage are twice as likely to have had their mileage rolled back (5.2%) compared to undamaged vehicles (2.6%). On a macroeconomic level, Serbia’s foreign trade exchange reached ~~52.5~~ 52.52 billion euros from January to August 2026, a 6.4% increase over the previous year.
