In Central Europe, the German Weather Service reports a significant rise in high-risk wildfire days over the last two to three decades. This trend is attributed to higher temperatures, increased evaporation, and prolonged droughts. Although recent While moderate rainfall in regions like Monschau may temporarily reduce surface flammability, experts note warn that deep soil moisture remains critically low. Mitigating long-term risks would require substantial rainfall equivalent to one or two months of average precipitation to rehydrate soil to a depth of one meter. The growing threat has manifested in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the largest wildfire in the region’s history burned 300 hectares and forced the evacuation of the village of Gey, requiring over 1,800 firefighters. To address these risks, improve management, researchers at BOKU Wien are utilizing advanced modeling to analyze wildfire behavior modeling—comparing spread models such as Farsite, Simtable, Prometheus, and PhyFire—to reconstruct past events and improve predictive capabilities for protecting forests and residential interface areas.
