Wildfire risks in Europe are increasing due to the combined effects of climate change and land management issues. In Sweden and parts of Southern Europe, while the frequency of fires may have decreased long-term, the intensity and scale of outbreaks are rising. This is driven by heat and dry vegetation, compounded by rural depopulation.

In Central Europe, the German Weather Service reports a significant rise in high-risk wildfire days over the last two to three decades. While moderate rainfall in regions like Monschau may temporarily reduce surface flammability, experts warn that deep soil moisture remains critically low. Mitigating long-term risks would require substantial rainfall equivalent to one or two months of average precipitation to rehydrate soil to a depth of one meter.

The growing threat has manifested in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the largest wildfire in the region’s history burned 300 hectares and forced the evacuation of the village of Gey, requiring over 1,800 firefighters. To improve management, researchers at BOKU Wien are utilizing advanced modeling—comparing spread models such as Farsite, Simtable, Prometheus, and PhyFire—to reconstruct past events and improve predictive capabilities for protecting forests and residential interface areas.
