Eurowings technical incidents and Málaga airport disruptions
Overview
In late July 2026, a Eurowings Airbus flight from Cologne/Bonn to Málaga returned to its origin after the crew encountered a cockpit warning regarding the landing-flap control system. The aircraft landed safely in Cologne with no injuries reported.
In August 2026, a Eurowings flight departing from Málaga for Stuttgart was forced to return to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport due to a potential blockage in the landing gear. The crew issued a ‘Pan-Pan’ urgency signal. Air traffic controllers managed the situation by reserving a specific runway for the aircraft and diverting other traffic to ensure the airport remained operational. The aircraft landed without incident, and normal airport operations resumed following a safety inspection of the runway.
On the following Sunday, Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport experienced further disruptions when operations were temporarily suspended for approximately 50 minutes. Multiple pilots reported a drone near the end of runway 12, leading to a security alert. This incident resulted in the diversion of eight flights from various locations, including Madrid, Tirana, Birmingham, Bristol, London, and Cork, to nearby airports in Seville and Alicante-Elche. Security forces investigated the area but found no drone, allowing operations to resume once the threat was cleared.
On Sunday night, a subsequent drone sighting near the approach zone caused further disruptions. Enaire, the Spanish air navigation manager, suspended arrivals for approximately 30 minutes starting around 21:00. During this period, eight flights were diverted, with seven going to Seville and one to Alicante. Eurocontrol also reported that the airport was unavailable for arrivals during this time.
