Everton Blair election to Georgia 13th District
Overview
Dr. Everton Blair, Jr. won a special election runoff to represent Georgia’s 13th Congressional District, securing 53% of the vote to defeat Marcye Scott. Blair, a Jamaican American and Harvard graduate, succeeds the late Representative David Scott.
His victory is noted as a historic milestone, as he is the first openly gay Black person elected to represent Georgia in the U.S. Congress and the first from a Southern state to hold such a distinction. Following his election, Blair was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives to serve the remainder of the unexpired term through January 2027.
As a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, Blair’s platform focuses on progressive issues including Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and raising the minimum wage.
