Major international airports are transitioning from simple transportation hubs into integrated commercial, cultural, and social centers, often referred to as ‘airport cities’. This evolution focuses on diversifying revenue and improving passenger experiences by incorporating retail, fine dining, art, and greenery into terminal designs.

Specific architectural landmarks are being used to establish unique regional identities. Examples include Singapore’s Changi Airport, which features the HSBC Rain Vortex indoor waterfall and tropical gardens, and Hamad International Airport in Doha, which emphasizes luxury and contemporary art. Other developments include Incheon International Airport’s blend of Korean culture and technology, and the SKYTOPIA project at Hong Kong International, designed as a multi-modal hub for arts and sports.

As air travel demand is projected to double by 2050, the trend extends from massive international hubs to smaller locations, such as Florianópolis in Brazil, which are increasingly serving as community gathering points through local amenities.
