Exercise intensity and seasonal activity shifts
Overview
Data from the 2024/25 Sports Habits Survey in Spain indicates that only 12.9% of sports practitioners increase their activity during vacations, while 35.5% train more frequently during working periods. Health risks arise when individuals attempt to abruptly increase exercise intensity or duration in September to compensate for reduced activity during summer holidays. While the ‘weekend warrior’ pattern can offer cardiovascular benefits, the primary danger is the sudden attempt to reclaim lost fitness levels through excessive intensity.
Experts emphasize that returning to physical activity after a break requires a gradual approach to avoid injury and overtraining. Although muscle mass may be retained, cardiovascular capacity and strength decline quickly, and connective tissues such as tendons and bones adapt much more slowly to new loads.
Common risks associated with reintegration include delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and overtraining syndrome, which can manifest as persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, increased heart rate, and decreased immunity. To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend starting with low-intensity activities, maintaining hydration, and prioritizing sleep. Structured programs, such as a four-week barbell reset focusing on fundamental movements, can help rebuild movement quality and training tolerance, while techniques like cold plunges are increasingly used to manage muscle pain.
