Expansion of Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americs

Overview

The Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas, a regional initiative led by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Development Bank, and the World Bank, has expanded its membership in the Caribbean and Central American regions.

In early August, the Bahamas became the first CARICOM member to join the alliance. This membership established a Primary Health Care Consultative Mechanism to coordinate investments and technical cooperation with the Bahamas National Health Strategy.

By late August, Honduras joined as the twelfth country in the region to participate. The Honduran strategy focuses on community-level healthcare, including disease elimination roadmaps, maternal mortality reduction, and the prevention of arboviral diseases. Planned infrastructure improvements in Honduras include the digital transformation of the health system and the rehabilitation of maternity clinics, laboratories, and vaccine warehouses.
