Exploration of volcanic and natural sites in Turkey
Overview
Exploration of volcanic and natural sites in Turkey has progressed from specialized scientific and archaeological research to broader organized expeditions.
Initial efforts focused on the Tendürek Mountain volcano, where archaeologist Onur Benli and climber Zayim Cemal Altay descended into the 300-meter-deep crater. They documented active fumaroles and boiling mud, with Benli describing the environment as resembling ‘the mouth of a dragon’ and a ‘hellish pit.’ Measurements confirmed the volcano remains geologically active, with vent temperatures reaching 84 degrees Celsius.
Subsequent activities expanded to include larger group expeditions aimed at promoting ecotourism. In the Tendürek region, a 33-person team from the Vadi Doğa Sporları Kulübü reached the summit, with some members observing the volcanic basin. Other regional activities included a 60-person trek in the Van Lake Basin to explore the İncekaya Crater and historical ruins, as well as a 100-person hike through the Kurtçukuru Canyon in Mersin.
